Prayer to St. Anthony of Padua
Most Holy St. Anthony,
the great love of God
you possessed while on
earth, merited for you
the gift of miracles
which you dispensed
freely to those in trouble
and adversity. Knowing
our many trials and
tribulations, we beseech
you to whisper our
petitions into the ears of
the Holy Child, Jesus,
whom you held many
times in your arms with
love and affection. If this
request is for God's
greater glory and my
salvation, may it be
granted. Amen.
St. Anthony of Padua
"The wonder Worker" (1195-1231)
St. Anthony came to be known as "The Wonder Worker" for the many miracles
and conversions attributed to him. Although quiet and unassuming, he was
regarded as a sensational preacher in his time. A Franciscan priest and professor of theology, he gave up teaching to be assigned to preach all over Italy, attracting huge crowds wherever he went. His brilliant attacks on corruption completely transformed the city of Padua. He had particular affection for the poor and
helped to abolish debtors's prisons.
St. Anthony is often depicted as holding the infant Jesus as it is said that the Christ child appeared to him in visions.
He is known as being of particular help in retrieving lost articles because of a story in which a book of Psalms was stolen and then returned because of St. Anthony.
He died on June 13 at the age of thirty-six. He was canonized the following year and declared a Doctor of The Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946.
Feast Day: June 13
