The Pope of the People

 Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born December 17th, 1936 in Flores, a

"barrio" of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the first of five

children born to Italian immigrants. Mario Jose Bergoglio and

Regina Maria Sivori. In 1955 Jorge, chose the path of the priesthood. He

studied theology, philosophy and humanities, and later received his

doctorate in theology. He taught literature, theology and psychology at

two colleges in Buenos Aires.

Jorge Bergoglio was ordained December 13, 1969, and four years later

began serving in provincial Argentina. In 1992 Pope John Paul 11

appointed him titular Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary of Buenos Aires. Later

that year, he received episcopal ordination from the Cardinal. He chose

as his motto, "miserando atque eligendo", which in Latin means, "by

having mercy, by choosing him." In 1998 he was elected archbishop of

Buenos Aires. Pope John Paul II appointed him is carnal three years

later. Cardinal Bergoglio chose humble accommodations, instead of th

 luxurious housing available to him. He often road public transit to work,

cooked his own meals and made frequent visits to the slums of Buenos

Aires, where he is simply known as father "Jorge"

 on March 13th, 2013 Cardinal Bergoglio was elected to succeed

Pope Benedict XVI. We chose the papal name Francis in honor of saint

Francis of Assisi. Hailed as "the first pope of the Americas, and "the first

Jesuit Pope"  Pope Francis known for his humility, the service to the

poor, and it's unrelenting commitment to building Bridges between

people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs-earning him the title of 

"The pope of the people"
