THE FIRST POPE

Prayer to

Saint Peter

O St Peter, you are the Rock upon

whom Jesus built his Church. Be the

Rock who keeps me firm in my faith,

steady on my way to heaven and strong

in times of trouble. Your loyalty to Our

Lord, your ceaseless efforts to spread

the Gospel, and your courage in facing

your own horrific deaths give us a

shining example of what it means to

love God with your whole heart, soul,

strength, and mind.

St. Peter, I know you can sympathize

with those of us with fall short. When

you denied Our Lord three times, you

wept bitter tears of remorse. But you

came back to Jesus, and you tried

again. Give those of us who sin

grievously the courage to confess our

sins, amend our lives and try again. Let

us always remember that, while we live,

we can run back to Our Lord Jesus who is Mercy itself. St Peter,

Prince of the Apostles, pray for us. Amen.

Verse on the back:

St. Peter

PATRON OF THE CHURCH AND FISHERMEN (DIED 65 AD)

St Peter was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ, leaders of

the early Christian Church. He was the first pope and has been

called Prince of the Apostles. Peter (then Simon) and his brother

Andrew originally were fisherman from the village of Bethsida

and Galilee. Jesus called Simon and Andrew to become "fishers of men." They

left their nets and followed Him. Preaching, teaching, and healing Jesus and

His disciples spread the Good News throughout the region of Galilee and

beyond.

In a dialogue between Jesus and his disciples (Matthew 16:13-19), Jesus

asked them, "Who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answers, "You are the

Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus then declares, "Blessed are you,

Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but

by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Cephas  (Rock or Peter),

and on this Rock I will build my church, and the Gates of hell shall not prevail

against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven whatever you

bind on Earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose On earth will

be loosed in heaven."

From this time on, Peter played a leadership role and was often spokesman

for all the Apostles. Peter was loving and loyal but impetuous. The night

before Jesus died, it terrified Peter denied three times that he knew Jesus.

When Peter realized what he had done, he went out and wept bitterly. After

Jesus' death and Resurrection, Peter affirmed three times love for Jesus,

offsetting his threefold denial, Jesus recomfirmed Perter's position.

After The descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles at Pentecost, this

once fearful man preached fearlessly about his Lord. Peter is said to have

founded the church in Rome with St. Paul, Serves as its bishop, authored two

epistels, and then met martyrdom there. Peter was crucified and 65 AD under Emperor Nero.
