The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared several times to a young girl named Catherine Leboure. She appeared dressed in a lovely gown and included with her image were the symbols of the Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary and a large letter “M”. Twenty four year old Catherine Laboure had just joined the Daughters of charity in Paris, France when she was awakened on the night of July18, 1830, by a small boy, who announced the first visit of the Blessed Virgin. The boy led the young novice inside the chapel, where the Blessed Virgin told Catherine she was to be entrusted with a special mission. Later that year, Catherine learned that she was to have a medal struck which would contain the symbols as those seen when the Blessed Virgin appeared. All who would wear the medal would receive the great grace of Mary. However, Catherine made little progress on the medal for some time since her confessor had difficulty believing her. Finally, when the matter was taken to the archbishop, the first 1500 medals were made, and only five years later more than two million had been struck. This medal became known as the “Miraculous Medal” and demonstrates the faith in Our Lady of Grace.
